Reforestation
Biodiversity
This project promotes sustainable biodiversity forest management and wildlife conservation in Minamisanriku, Miyagi. In the forest, weeding is munimized to maintain the living environment of wildlife, and monitor the use of timber after logging to ensure responsible use. We also promote the protection of golden eagles and support the local economy. This project is operated by Sakyu Ltd., in partnership with the Minamisanriku Town Forest Management Council (the first FSC®-certified organization in the region), and WWF Japan.

This project provides habitats for organisms, promoting biodiversity.
Trees remove carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and store it as organic carbon within their bodies.
The forest management practices implemented here are FSC certified.
Supplying wood and wood products, and developing forests as tourism resources, brings economic benefits to the region.
It enhances disaster prevention functions through forests' soil erosion control and flood prevention effects.
We grow nursery stock suited to the region for several years.
Once the seedlings are mature, we clear the undergrowth at the planting site and plant the seedlings. During clearing, we preserve as much of the vegetation as possible to maintain habitats for wildlife.
We cultivate the trees while performing thinning and pruning to prevent forest overcrowding. When the trees are sufficiently mature, we harvest them for use, and carry out reforestation to maintain a sustainable forest economy.

We cultivate high-quality logs and process them into building materials, furniture, and more. Minamisanriku cedar is known as the “beautiful cedar” for its exquisite grain.

Forests offer recreational benefits through seasonal landscape changes and the air-purifying effects of trees. This project utilizes forests as tourism resources for ecotourism and educational programs.

Minamisanriku was once home to golden eagles. This project involves expert surveys and the restoration of mountain environments that serve as hunting grounds for golden eagles, aiming to enable their settlement and breeding.
